A Farthing Family Vacation

It was hard to believe it — but they had finally finished up the mission Emily started so many years ago. What she had always dreamed of was now a reality. The Farthings were Sim-millionaires! And they could finally relax and maybe indulge just a little bit of the finer things in life.

Liam and Jessica no longer had to worry about pinching pennies because they had certainly amassed more than enough to live on comfortably for the rest of their lives…and their children’s lives…and their childrens’ lives…and so on and so forth. Still, it would have been silly for them to make a drastic life change. And it just didn’t make sense to  have worked so hard towards becoming Sim-millionaires only to waste away their hard-earned simoleons on frivolities.

Liam continued to work as a Patron of the Arts, filling his spare time with crafting at his woodworking bench and painting. Jessica continued to tend the garden, paint and care for their home. Activities were all done for fun now, as opposed to before, when they did it all for the money. Because they chose to still keep working, Jessica and Liam were able to bring in a decent amount of simoleons to balance out whatever they may have spent so they hardly saw any depletion in their wealth. Even after hiring a maid to clean the house and a professional gardener to help Jessica maintain the family’s prized garden.

Their new financial status also helped to bring them even closer as a family as it gave them the ability to do activities together — like go on family vacations!

Liam was so excited to be able to take the family to Granite Falls. They had never been anywhere outside of the confines of their neighborhood and it was going to be a really nice treat for them all. He rented a lovely two-story cabin near the water.

“This is a really nice place, Liam, but are you sure this isn’t too much? It looks expensive.” Jessica said once they had arrived to the Lakeside Retreat. He had reserved the place for the week, costing them over §6,000!

“No need to worry about that, my love. We’re Sim-millionaires! And this…this is just a drop in the bucket. A small dip into our household funds.”

“I know, but…we’ve never spent this kind of money before in our lives. We’ve always been frugal when it comes to that.”

“Yes, we have, but I think we’ve worked hard enough throughout our lives to be able to enjoy a family vacation in nice cabin by the lake with amazing scenery like this.” Liam responded, gesturing to the landscape around them.

“I just don’t want to go crazy with the spending and lose all our money.”

“We won’t, my love. I’m still working. You’re still painting masterpieces. Plus, the family garden is still producing a good amount. So even after you and I are gone, the girls will still have some income — so long as they take good care of it. We’ll be fine, ” he reassured her. “Now, I think it’s time we start actually enjoying the fruits of our labors.”

And he was right. The family had more than enough to sustain generations of Farthings comfortably. Their descendants wouldn’t have to worry about working a day in their life if they didn’t want to. Quite the accomplishment, considering Liam and Jessica were only the 2nd generation in the Farthing line.

They considered renovating the family home when they got back from their vacation, to make it more fitting of a wealthy family, but decided against it. Just because they could afford to spend the money on something that grand, didn’t mean they should rub it in their neighbors’ faces. Plus, they loved that home and all the memories they had made inside of its walls. They didn’t need to change a thing.

While on vacation, they spent a lot of time relaxing together and visiting different areas of Granite Falls. But their favorite place above all were the falls located in the national park.

While everyone one was having fun fishing it its crystal clear waters, Liam took a moment to admire the beautiful view. He had never seen anything so breath-taking. Having been so focused on completing the Rosebud Challenge, he had never had the chance. But now that it was all over, they were all free to live their lives the way they wanted, no longer held back by any restrictions. Liam smiled as he thought about his parents. They would be so proud of their accomplishments and the loving family they had created. And, you know what? He was, too.

Week 15: Victory!

Starting Funds = §765,378

Day 1 — Sunday

Determined to complete this Rosebud Challenge before the week was over, Liam sent Ava out to collect everything she possibly could from around their house while he crafted a couple bathtubs and Jessica set to painting masterpieces. Having aged up into a teenager, he figured it was time for her to start contributing to the household. And they were getting so close…

Day 3 — Tuesday

While taking a quick break between classes, Ava spied some money just sitting on a sink in the bathroom. She debated on whether or not to just slide it in her locker for “safekeeping.” The right thing to do would be to turn it in to the principal right away. But who said doing the right thing was always the thing to do?

Ava pocketed the money and made her way back to the classroom hopeful no one noticed. By the end of the day, Ava left school a little wiser…and a little richer!

And who said a formal education doesn’t pay off?

Day 7 — Saturday

There was one last big push to reach §1,000,000 in the Farthing household today. Everyone contributed. Ava harvested the plants in their garden. Jessica worked hard to create masterpieces at the easel, hoping they would sell for a lot of simoleons. After work, Liam crafted a few bathtubs at the woodworking table to give them an even better chance of meeting their financial goal.

At the end of the day, they were all exhausted from their various efforts. Liam didn’t want to get his or the family’s hopes up, but he had a good feeling. Before tucking into bed for the night, he logged in to the online banking website to check the balance of the household’s account.

He blinked and rubbed his eyes, wanting to make sure he wasn’t just seeing things — that the figure displayed before him was really there…

§1,021,075

That was the final total of all the simoleons in the household funds, including the value of their home and that of all their personal belongings. They had done it! The Farthings had completed the Rosebud Challenge!

Liam smiled, a sense of relief finally washing over him. He no longer had to work so hard. His family could finally enjoy the fruits of all their labor. And if Emily was still alive, she would be so proud of him and what he had accomplished.

Day 1 — Sunday

While browsing through an art brokerage website, Liam noticed that a certain painting had been greatly undervalued. He debated on whether he should take advantage of this deep discount or contact the site to have them correct the mistake.

It really wasn’t a hard decision for him to make. He quickly reached out to the site owner who ended up being so grateful for Liam’s help in correcting the mistake that she offered him a 20% discount on his next purchase from her online store!

Too bad this is a Rosebud Challenge and we can’t buy anything…

Ava was grabbing her lunch from her backpack when she noticed something inside. It was a note, shaped like a heart, with the words “U R CUTE!” written on it and nothing else. She though it might’ve been the new boy, who always seemed to be staring at her. She decided to wait it out and see if anyone comes forward.

Sure enough…at lunch some friends laughed and waved to her.

“Hey, cutie!” one of them taunted.

She wadded up the note and tossed it at him, laughing along at the joke. Someday it’ll happen for real, but Ava relieved it wasn’t today.

Liam was being interviewed by the local news about his recently curated exhibition of “Island Art.” As a publicity stunt, he had the idea to dress up in a palm tree costume, but Jessica encouraged him to dress up in a nice pair of dress slacks and one of his white shirts instead. You can’t go wrong with this classic outfit.

Good thing he listened to her because Liam looked great, was well spoken and drew a decent crowd to to the museum — earning himself a small performance gain at work — which meant his next promotion wasn’t that far off.

Day 1 — Sunday

All of the momentum Emily and Mason had gained towards the family goal before their passing had disappeared. The hope of finishing the Rosebud Challenge in the near future had left with them, leaving Liam to wonder how his accomplishments were ever going to match up to those of his parents. Unable to paint any masterpieces and unable to make the kind of simoleons he knew the household needed, he found himself in a slump. How are we ever going to finish?

After some encouraging words from his wife, Liam set to working on as many paintings as possible during his free time. He hoped the constant practice would improve his technique rather quickly and he’d be popping out the masterpieces in no time — just like his father.

Liam knew that his parents started this challenge with nothing and had to work really hard to earn every simoleon in the household account. He just had a hard time wrapping his head around how they were able to keep at it for so long — How were they so successful? And how did they not become discouraged?

After Liam and Jessica were married, Mason made sure to give his new daughter-in-law a warm welcome to the family. He was proud of his son’s choice in a spouse and knew Emily would’ve been too, if she could have been there.

Jessica was adjusting nicely to the Farthings’ way of life — everyone had a routine, everyone had a purpose. She took on the responsibility of gathering the collectibles and harvestables that popped up around the house. And in her spare time, she would help Mason tend the garden or tidy up their home.

The stress of finding Mason crumpled on the ground outside of the family home was more than Jessica could handle. She was beside herself with grief over losing her father-in-law, and newest friend, so she ended up going into labor in the middle of the night.

Not much for the home birth, she and Liam headed to the hospital to deliver their baby.

Liam smiled at their little girl, beaming with pride, as he held her in his arms. She was so adorable. Who knew you could love something so little so much?

Mason continued to contribute to the family’s dream from the grave, appearing in the middle of the night to paint at his old easel. Liam couldn’t bring himself to sell the painting, figuring it could still contribute to the family’s household worth if he kept it, and hung it up on the wall like most of his late father’s other works.

Day 2 — Monday

Taking his parents’ advice seriously, Liam decided he would take more time out of his day to work on his personal life…starting with having a proper conversation with Jessica Calhoun, a girl he had known since he was just a boy. And may have had a crush on for just as long.

She was the most beautiful girl he had ever laid eyes on. They ended up becoming fast friends, and eventually he worked up the nerve to ask her out on a date.

Jessica’s laugh was infectious, always making Liam crack up whenever he was around her. She was everything he had been looking for in a potential spouse. She was beautiful, smart, responsible and not one to shy away from a challenge. She was perfect. And Liam was completely head over heels for her!

Day 3 — Tuesday

It was with the heaviest of hearts that both Mason and Liam awoke from their beds this morning as fate had dealt them a horrible blow, stealing from them their beloved wife and mother the previous afternoon.

Emily was gone. Forever. The Grim Reaper came and took her away. Devastated over their loss, they made sure to place her gravestone in a quiet area of the garden. She had always loved the outdoors and Mason could think of no better place for her to lay at rest.

Liam now felt this great weight bearing down on his shoulders. Not only was he grieving the loss of his mother, but now, he was coming to the realization that all the things she had tried to prepare him for were here. He was his mother’s sole heir. With her gone, it was time for him to take charge of her dream.

Day 4 — Wednesday

As much as Mason and Liam were grieving for Emily, life had to continue on as usual. Mason preferred to keep his sorrow at bay by working himself to distraction. He would spend the early morning hours outside, tending to the garden, and in the afternoon, he would hide away in the study to paint for hours on end.

Liam, on the other hand, knew the best way to honor his mother’s memory was to live life to the fullest and to complete her lifelong dream by becoming a Sim-millionaire. It was what she would have wanted, he constantly reminded himself whenever he felt like crawling under the covers to cry it all out. He couldn’t let his grief prevent him from pursing this goal. And he couldn’t do it all alone.

That’s when he decided to invite Jessica over to the house for a home-cooked meal and a very important conversation.

“I know this may seem like something coming at you out of left field,” Liam began, “but…I know you are the one for me. I have admired you from the moment I saw you, Jess. You are smart, beautiful and utterly perfect for me. I am falling in love with you.”

“Oh, wow.”

“Ever since my mother’s passing, I’ve done a lot of thinking about how I want to live my life…and who I want to spend it with. That’s you. Life’s too short to put anything on hold. Would you like to move in with me?”

“I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear that, Liam, because I am falling in love with you, too.” Jessica responded, smiling from ear to ear. “I would love to move in with you.”

“Oh, that’s great!” He jumped up from the table, pulling her into a happy embrace. “This is going to be awesome.”

Day 6 — Friday

Liam and Jessica had been spending a lot of time chatting, exchanging flirtations and getting to know each other. With each moment that passed, the two fell more and more in love. Once Liam was pretty confident in their feelings for each other, he popped the question. We’re on a deadline here, folks. No time to waste.

Of course, Jessica happily accepted his proposal and the couple quietly tied the knot in the family’s living room.
